Linden Schools Mark Juneteenth at McManus Middle School
Linden Public Schools marked Juneteenth at McManus Middle School with a program that brought students, staff, families, and community leaders together.
Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, when enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, learned of their freedom more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued. At the event, the district said the day serves as a reminder of the pursuit of freedom, equality, and justice.
The celebration featured student dance performances, Juneteenth trivia, spoken word presentations, and a performance by the Select Choir. It also included an energetic jazz band performance that drew audience attention.
Before the program started, attendees were welcomed by remarks from Board President Malaysia Thomas, Board Commissioner Brianna Armstead, and Superintendent Dr. Atiya Perkins. The district said their messages emphasized the importance of remembering history, embracing diversity, and empowering future generations.
Linden Public Schools said the McManus community honored Juneteenth’s legacy through the performances and remarks and reaffirmed its commitment to education, inclusion, and unity.
