Brighton PD Launches Blue Envelope Accommodation Program
Brighton Police Department in Colorado has introduced the Blue Envelope Program to improve communication with individuals who have invisible disabilities and need additional accommodations. The program aims to help officers interact more effectively with members of the community during interactions such as emergencies.
Residents can pick up a blue envelope at the front desk of the Brighton Police Department, located at 3401 E Bromley Ln., Brighton, CO 80601. Those unable to visit in person may request an envelope by emailing their name and address to kblandin@brightonco.gov.
The envelope contains a checklist that includes items such as a copy of a driver’s license, vehicle registration, and insurance. It provides instructions to officers such as speaking calmly and quietly, approaching slowly, not touching the individual, turning off bright lights, and avoiding shouting or harsh noises.
The program also highlights that individuals may exhibit behaviors such as resistance to help, unawareness of danger, non-verbal responses, or wandering if unattended. The envelope includes sections for contact information for emergency contacts, as well as spaces to note conditions such as hearing loss, limited vision, autism, Tourette syndrome, tic disorders, diabetes, seizure disorders, or other special needs.
Participation in the Blue Envelope Program is by request only, and no participant list is maintained. More information is available on the department’s website.
