Greeley home fire; one treated for smoke inhalation

Greeley, Colo. — A residential structure fire was reported at approximately 3:30 p.m. May 27, 2026, in the 1000 block of 4th Avenue, according to the Weld County Regional Communications Center.

Initial reports indicated flames were visible from the home and an adjoining power line, and that an evacuation of the building was in progress.

On arrival, crews upgraded the incident to a working structure fire, then pulled an attack line and began a primary search of the structure. After clearing the first floor, firefighters climbed to the second floor from the outside and performed a search from the window due to conditions inside preventing access to the stairs. No victims were found inside, and crews focused on finding and extinguishing the fire, which had spread to the attic space.

Several cuts were made to the roof to vent heat and smoke before firefighters extinguished the fire. Xcel Energy technicians assessed a fallen power line and cut power to the house to ensure the safety of those working in the area. Overhaul and gas monitoring were conducted to ensure the fire was completely out and the area was safe to occupy without protective equipment. A fire investigation concluded the fire was accidental in nature, caused by improperly discarded cigarettes.

One person was treated by UCHealth EMS for smoke inhalation and released on scene; no other injuries occurred. The American Red Cross of Colorado responded and offered assistance to the homeowner for displacement. The department thanked the community for quick reporting and actions that helped prevent further casualties and spread, and also thanked partners and the Greeley Police Department for responding and assisting.

"We’re appreciative that the quick reporting and actions of the members of this community helped to prevent any further casualties and spread of this fire. We also appreciate our partners above and the Greeley Police Department for responding to this incident and providing assistance," the department said.

As a reminder, please ensure that smoking materials are fully extinguished prior to being discarded. Use water or an ash tray to ensure they are put out all the way before leaving them. Never smoke in bed, around medical oxygen, or when you’re tired. Please make sure you have working smoke alarms throughout your home and that you have a home fire escape plan in place. Keep walkways and stairs clear of boxes and clutter so that you can make a quick escape if needed.
