Woman Struck and Killed by Train
GREELEY, Colo. — On Thursday, April 23, at approximately 8:00 p.m., Greeley Police responded to the 300 block of N. 8th Avenue after reports a pedestrian had been struck by a train.
A Union Pacific train traveling south observed an object on the tracks and believed it could be a person crouching on the tracks. The conductor sounded the train’s horn and applied the emergency braking system, but the train could not stop in time.
The train, which was carrying about 26 million pounds of freight, had an estimated 100-foot reaction distance to stop.
Emergency responders located a 37-year-old woman from Greeley, but she had died from her injuries. The Weld County Coroner’s Office will release her identity after notifying next of kin.
The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to contact Officer Josh Franklin at Josh.Franklin@greeleypd.com.
No further information will be released today.
